One of our favorite adventures we have ever done is with Wild Side Specialty Tours. It is located on the west shore of Oahu, Hawaii. On their website they say “Warning! Potentially life changing. Certainly life affirming.” They couldn’t have said it any better!
This dolphin cruise is unlike any other we have ever seen or done. The number of passengers is 6-10. This helps keep the atmosphere personal but it is also good for the wildlife. The last things the dolphins want is 50 people jumping off a boat and splashing in their home.
The tour is educational and taught us so much about the dolphins and how to best protect them and conserve the ocean.
Our daughter Alyssa was 7 on this tour. I left the rest of the kids at the hotel with my mom. (Thanks mom!) This is probably the youngest I would take a child. They need to be calm in the water with the animals. If your child is comfortable swimming in the middle of the ocean with wildlife then it would be fine to bring them.
As we searched for the dolphins we were taught the proper way to interact with them. Of course no touching or feeding. We needed to treat the ocean as their home and treat it with respect. When we get into the water we do so gently without splashing or making a lot of noise. Then we would find a dolphin swimming near us and start swimming along its same path. Basically we were one with the dolphins. To dive under the water while swimming next to the dolphins and hear them talking was incredible.
Alyssa was a little nervous getting in but I kept one arm around her and gave her reassurance. Once she saw those dolphins swimming next to us, she was mesmerized
I would pay for this cruise over and over again. It is worth every penny. The experience we had can not be measured by words alone.
Tips: I recommend renting a car to get to this location. We took a Uber from our hotel, which was fine going out, but coming back we couldn’t get one and had to take a public bus.
